Speaker biographies


Athletes

Jacco Arends (NED) is an eight times national badminton champion, European bronze medallist and Olympian participating in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. 

Sophie Christiansen (UK) is a British dressage rider who has competed in four successive Paralympic Games and is currently an eight-time Paralympic champion and has won multiple World and European titles. 

Andrew Heyes (UK) is an international distance runner competing for Great Britain on track and cross-country and a British Champion at 3000m. Andrew is a member of the UK Anti-Doping Athlete Commission and chair-elect of the British Athletics Athlete Commission. 

Sara Isaković (SLO) is the most successful Slovenian swimmer, winner of the silver Olympic medal at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, which were the highlight of her sports career.

Ali Jawad (UK) is a British Para Powerlifter. From having dreams of being a Paralympian at the age of 6 to becoming a 3-time Paralympian culminating with winning silver at the Rio 2016 with aspirations of competing in Tokyo 2020. 

Patrick O'Leary (Ireland) is dedicated to water sports and has been kayaking for more than 20 years and swims regularly. He has represented Ireland in athletics (Schoolboy) canoe polo and more recently in the European (4th) and World (5th) championships in paracanoeing which has recently been included in the Paralympic programme. 

Practitioners

Colin Allen (UK Anti-Doping)  is the Education Programme Manager at UKAD overseeing the Education Delivery Network and development of education programmes, training courses, resources and content to support athletes and athlete support personnel. 

Tony Cunningham (World Anti-Doping Agency) is Senior Manager in WADA’s Education Department with responsibility for Social Science Research and Policy. 

Erik Duiven (Doping Authority Netherlands) is Director Education at Doping Authority Netherlands. Together with his team Erik develops, implements and evaluates education programs for elite sports and fitness. He’s also leading the scientific affairs of Doping Authority Netherlands. 

Mike Earl (World Rugby) is the General Manager of Anti-Doping at World Rugby, the head of a dedicated team who manage testing and education programmes within international rugby, and work closely with WADA, NADOs, independent test service providers, and competition organisers to harmonise programmes across the elite level of the sport.  

Amanda Hudson (World Anti-Doping Agency) joined WADA in August 2019 where she became the first ever Director of Education, responsible for leading WADA's education function and establishing a new stand-alone Education Department. 

Mike James (Director of Sports Injury Fix & The Endurance Physio) is a former Military Physical Training Instructor and rehabilitation specialist, fitness expert and Sports Rehabilitator.  

Rebecca Lee (UEFA) has been part of the Anti-Doping team at UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) for the last six years. 

Siobhán Leonard (Sport Ireland) is the Director of Anti-Doping & Ethics in Sport Ireland. She has worked with the Irish Sports Council, now Sport Ireland, since 1999 and has over twenty years of experience in the area of Anti-Doping.  

Nina Makuc (Slovenian Anti-Doping Organisation) undertook her studies in the Faculty of Sport at the University of Ljubljana; graduating with her degree in Physical Training in 2003 and her PhD in Kinesiology Science in 2011. 

Michele Verroken (Sporting Integrity) has worked at all levels of sport specialising in integrity, governance and anti-doping.  As director of international sports consultancy SPORTING INTEGRITY Ltd, Michele works across professional (esports, golf, MMA) and amateur sports with athletes, support personnel and federations.

Sue Backhouse (Leeds Beckett University) is Professor and Director of Research for Sport and Exercise Science, Leisure and Tourism in the Carnegie School of Sport at Leeds Beckett University (LBU). 

Ian Boardley (University of Birmingham) is a Reader (Associate Professor) in Sport and Exercise Psychology and Deputy Head of Research in the School of Sport, Exercise, and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom. 

Martin Chandler (University of Birmingham) is a PhD student at the University of Birmingham, exploring “Effects of Permitted Forms of Performance Enhancement on Determinants of Doping in UK Student-Athletes”, having previously worked there as a Research Fellow in Performance Enhancing Drugs on the RESPECT project.

Laurie Patterson (Leeds Beckett University) is a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology in the Carnegie School of Sport at Leeds Beckett University. Her principal research interest is investigating (anti-)doping behaviour among athletes and athlete support personnel, to inform effective anti-doping practice, programmes and policy. 

Andrea Petróczi (Kingston University London) is a Research Professor at Kingston University London (UK). She is an internationally recognised expert in anti-doping research, with a background in psychology, management & marketing and journalism. 

Helen Staff (Leeds Beckett University) is a Post-Doctoral Researcher at Leeds Beckett University, UK and a Fellow of the High Education Academy.

Clean Sport Insight Forum | london

More than 130 delegates gathered at London’s Congress Centre on Wednesday 4 September for the Clean Sport Alliance’s inaugural Clean Sport Insight Forum, hosted by UK Anti-Doping (UKAD).

The Forum brought together athletes, policy-makers and anti-doping researchers to discuss a range of issues within anti-doping, particularly around supporting athletes and promoting a clean sport environment. The event produced fascinating conversations on the latest trends and considerations in anti-doping.
